Frequently Asked Questions

Where is your office?

English, 285 Court St. Room 106, the first floor. My mailbox is in the same building.

What is the best way to contact you?
It depends on why youre contacting me. You may leave a message on my office voice mail at x2448 if youre not in a hurry or you know Im on campus. I dont check my voicemail everyday, however. If you want a quick response, its probably best to contact me by email at mdlewis@wesleyan.edu. Please note that my email address has a middle initial. It is mDlewis not mlewis. However, If youre sending me an assignment especially if youre sending an attachment you should send it to me at professorlewis@yahoogroups.com. That way it wont get deleted!

What should we call you?
Professor Lewis.

When are your office hours?
Mondays from 4:30-5:30 and Tuesdays from 2-3. You should make an appointment if you know youre planning to come by. Otherwise you may drop on in. During my office hours, I plan to be logged onto AOL and Yahoo Messenger as lewiscourse. If you have a question and prefer to chat during those times, feel free to contact me that way. Please note, however, that chatting online does not take the place of face-to-face, one-to-one dialogue with your professors. This is just a quick fix solution.

Im deathly ill and contagious. Should I come to class today?
No. You may miss three classes for any reason. I dont need to know why.

Ive missed three classes already, what happens now?
Your grade will be lowered by one letter grade for each class you miss in excess of three. After five classes, you fail the course. If you are habitually late, your tardiness may count towards an absence.

I missed class. Should I ask you to recap at the beginning of the next class?
No. First check the announcements page. Then talk to a friend. I will leave any handouts for you outside my door room 106, 285 Court St. Come to my office hours if you want to talk about what you missed.

I have to leave class early. Should I announce this at the start of class interrupt class as Im leaving?
No. If you need to discuss it with me, email me before or after class.  Im not going to have my paper done on time, what should I do? Write me and ask for an extension. You may have an extension as long as you contact me at least 24 hours before the paper is due. I dont need to know why you want an extension. Im really, really tired of excuses,
so please spare me unless theres something you especially want me to know. Just write: "Professor Lewis, I dont think Im going to be finished with x paper by the deadline. May I have an extension?" The answer will be yes. You will have an extension for one day. If you need longer than one extra day, I may be able to help you, but my answer
will depend on what other students are doing and my schedule.

I didnt ask for an extension and now Im late. What will happen?
You will be marked down a letter grade for every day you are late.
(Hopefully it was going to be an A paper.) After three days, you will
fail the assignment. Incidentally, if you ask for an extension and
youre late for that date, the same rules apply.
